The best pictures of the first stage of the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race – one of the most gruelling sailing competitions in the world. This year’s edition will cover 39,379 nautical miles and will visit 11 ports in 11 countries (Spain, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, United States, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Sweden) over a period of nine months. Stage one, which measured 6,487 nautical miles, finished in Cape Town earlier this month. Stage two, from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, begins on November 19.
