A-League backtracks on proposed reduced foreign players quota

  • Foreign player cap will remain at five per club, not four as proposed

  • But clubs will lose one of their visa slots in two years


A-League clubs have successfully lobbied league chiefs to call off plans to reduce the foreign player cap from next season. Football Federation Australia announced on Monday their proposed reduction of foreign players at each club would not be moving from five to four. Instead, clubs will lose one of their visa slots in two years – from the 2017/18 season.


The foreign player cap is used by the league to ensure a balance between local talent and overseas stars. The widely suspected backdown was confirmed last week by the FFA board and also closes the door on a “4+1” proposal that would give A-League clubs four visa positions with another slot for an Asian player.
