Aljaz Bedene has won his first match since becoming a British citizen after the Slovenian-born player won in the opening round of qualifying for the Casablanca Open. Bedene, the 25-year-old who has lived in the United Kingdom for seven years and is now a citizen, claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Maxime Chazal of France on the clay in Morocco.
Ranked 83rd in the world, Bedene is now the British No2 behind Andy Murray, and described his first match as a British player as “awesome”.
