It had the feel of a defining day for Burnley. Their brave bid to defy footballing gravity and financial muscle alike may be almost over. An afternoon when they could have gone as high as 16th instead culminated with them propping up the table. Their momentum is entirely downward and it threatens to take them back to the Championship. A game where a penalty was wrongly awarded against them and when Everton’s match-winner, Kevin Mirallas, ought to have been sent off suggested they lack both form and fortune.
Instead, the Belgian’s decider took Everton past 40 points. Burnley would have to win each of their five remaining games to progress that far. Their one consolation may lie in the fixture list, which has been imbalanced. Last week’s defeat to Arsenal marked the end of an eight-game run that pitted them against the division’s top eight. If they had hoped a sight of the lesser lights would offer respite, they were mistaken. Everton cruised to a fourth win in five games, despite the latest Goodison Park penalty mystery.
