Gymnast Amy Tinkler still in the pink as European challenge beckons

The teenager is hoping to continue where she left off when taking the British championships by storm but knows the competition will be strong in Montpellier

Walking out into the Echo Arena, Liverpool, with the lights dimmed, one section of the crowd caught the eye of 15-year-old gymnast Amy Tinkler: a swathe of luminescent pink. Competing in her first senior British championships, Tinkler’s South Durham team-mates were there to cheer her on, dressed head to toe in pink leotards, jackets and scrunchies.

“When the lights went off, you could see them!” says the teenager who became the latest in a line of British talent to take the sport by storm when she won the title in Liverpool. “The atmosphere was amazing, we had loads of girls from our club there supporting me. Obviously our club’s known for being the Pink Gym so all the girls supporting me were in bright pink.” Back in South Durham the whole of the gym is pink too – from the crash mats to the mats under the beams.
