Manchester United’s thrilling, physically relentless 4-2 defeat of Manchester City at Old Trafford was in many ways a typically English derby: a match full of passion, mistakes, goals, mistakes and fine attacking combinations (and mistakes).
Against that it was also in many ways an un-English affair. For a start, the two most important players on either side – as United recovered from conceding the opening goal – are both currently available for selection by Roy Hodgson. And beyond that, the pivotal figure in a match featuring the five highest paid overseas players in the Premier league was an ambling 34-year-old anti-glamour English midfielder who scored no goals, provided no assists, scarcely made the highlights reel, but still looked the most quietly decisive presence on the pitch.
