Anyone who questions whether the FA Cup really has magical powers should watch a tape of this match and see how it transformed Marouane Chamakh into a Moroccan version of Dennis Bergkamp.
Perhaps it was a one-off. It will probably never happen again. But this was a performance to cherish from the much-maligned Crystal Palace striker, who has mostly been cast as a hapless figure of fun ever since he arrived in England in 2010. Chamakh, in his unlikely role as a roving No10, was outstanding for Alan Pardew’s side and it was his two goals that fired Palace into the fifth round at Southampton’s expense.
